Quaternary Ammonium Polymers are water soluble compounds that show very strong affinity for anionic substances. They are highly appreciated for having antimicrobial property hence are used in disinfectants and also serve as antistatic agents for various cosmetics. In textile processing industries, these polymers act as fabric softeners that provide silky & smooth feel to textiles. They are also admired for having ability to accelerate reaction between reagents & immiscible solvents and are used as phase transfer catalysts in organic chemistry. These ammonium polymers can be industrially produced by alkylation of tertiary amines in presence of a halocarbon.
